The Pröbstingsee (also Pröbstinger See , Pröbsting-See or as the brand name PröbstingSee ) is an artificial lake in Borken - Hoxfeld in the valley of the Bocholter Aa in the Münsterland . It is the centerpiece of a local recreation area . The name of the Pröbstingsee is derived from the former manor house Pröbsting , which is located in close proximity to the lake.

Surroundings
The Pröbstingsee is located just 3.8 kilometers west of Borken city center. The next larger town west of the lake is Rhede , approx. 7 kilometers away. Directly south of the lake, around the L 581 , is the core of the Rhedebrugge farming community . To the east of the lake, settlements belong to the Hoxfeld peasantry . The Borken-Hoxfeld airfield and the Josef Bresser public observatory are also located there. In the north of the lake is the Busch Pröbsting forest area .
Location in the water system
The Bocholter Aa does not flow through the lake, but is connected to it. Shortly after the western end of the lake, the Mengeringbach flows from Grütlohn into the Aa.
Sea design
There is a separate bathing lake at the western end of the lake. From here, the lake stretches for almost one kilometer with a width of around 250 m. Four islands are stored in the middle, two of which lie on each bank. The islands on the south side are accessible via bridges and are integrated into the shore landscape. The northern islands serve as breeding grounds for water birds and are not accessible. At both ends of the lake, the water level is regulated by dams. The water is channeled from or out of the Borkener Aa, which is channeled north around the lake in an artificial river bed.
history
The Pröbstingsee area was planned and implemented as a local recreation area in the 1970s. In 2011, the city of Borken renewed and improved the facilities at the Pröbstingsee, such as signs, benches, etc. as part of a funding project.
use
The Pröbstingsee is the leisure center of the city of 40,000 people thanks to its easy accessibility from Borken, especially for cyclists through the cycle path on the route of the former Baumbergebahn . Extensive park landscapes have been released for barbecues or picnics, are provided with playgrounds and accessed through paths and benches.
water sports
Pedal boats and canoes can be hired by the hour from the boathouse on the west bank of the lake. Sailing and rowing clubs practice their training on the lake. Every year the Sparkasse organizes a Dragonboat Cup , which enjoys a great response from the population.
gastronomy
The boathouse itself offers a café and a corresponding lake terrace. There is also an inn on the beach to the west of the lake.
campsite
In May 2019, a luxury campsite with 60 mobile homes and several safari tents was opened at Pröbstingsee.

There are other leisure facilities in the immediate vicinity of the lake, such as the Borken climbing forest or the planetary nature trail , which extends around the lake.
