The Blue Lake is located in the area of the city of Ratingen near Düsseldorf . It was built in the mid-1930s from a disused limestone quarry that overflowed with groundwater.

Quarries

The company Ratinger Kalkwerke GmbH extracted lime in two pits here. The company closed in 1932 due to a lack of productivity. After the mining operation ended, the groundwater collected and the Blue Lake was created. It has an area of about 2.2 hectares.

The lake is up to 10 meters deep. The often mentioned 35 meters refer to the total pit depth. The transformation of limestone into dolomite can be seen in all phases on its steep banks . You can drive up to these steep banks with rental boats and see the different stages of transformation at close range.

A second remaining pit is called the Gray Hole.

Blue lake natural stage

The Blue Lake became known nationwide through the natural stage of the same name on the shore area. After the first beginnings, this was operated jointly by the district of Mettmann and the city of Ratingen from 1952 to 1994 from May to September .
