The list of quarries in North Rhine-Westphalia focuses on active and former, above-ground and underground quarries for the extraction of basalt , granite , greywacke , limestone , marble , sandstone , slate , black slate and similar rock. They often represent important biotopes and geotopes even after they have been abandoned .
