The Dünkelberg quarry is located in the Muttental south of the Ruhr in Witten . It is connected to the Muttental mining trail .

The quarry was operated by the "Dünkelberg brickworks". This brick factory was located on the site of the Nachtigall colliery , which was closed in 1892.

The extracted slate was transported through the 130 meter long nightingale tunnel to the brick site. During the coal emergency after the Second World War, the nightingale tunnel was used to mine coal deposits. The nightingale tunnel was later expanded into the visitor mine of the LWL industrial museum, the Zeche Nachtigall .

The “Lower Witten Layers” between the Finefrau-Nebenbank seam, the uppermost, and the Mausegatt seam, are exposed on a profile of around 100 m thickness with six buildable coal seams. The intermediate ones are called u. a. "Geitling", "Geitling 3". In the regional language, Geitling stands for black thrush .
