Landscape in the Muttental

The Muttenbach is a left tributary of the Ruhr in the south of the city of Witten in North Rhine-Westphalia between the districts of Bommern and Herbede . It characterizes the Muttental , which is now accessible to tourists through the Muttental mining trail .

The Muttenbach rises in the corridor "In der Mutte" in Durchholz and flows into the Ruhr on the left after a distance of about 6 km .

In the years 1906 to 1910 the “Muttenbach Valley Melioration Cooperative” carried out measures to improve the meadows . For this purpose, small concrete weirs with flat slides and branch channels were created in order to flood the meadows in the spring.

The name component Mutte ( nds. For sow , a female domestic pig) refers to the former use of forest pastures in this area (cf. acorn fattening ).

The first hard coal in the Ruhr area is said to have been found in Muttental . The mining of coal began in open-cast mining around 1510; the first documentary mention of 1552 can be found in the court files of the nearby Hardenstein Castle .

The historical role of the Muttental is reflected today by the Muttental mining trail , which was laid out in 1972 , the industrial museum Zeche Nachtigall, opened in 2003, and various industrial history museum locations. Other sights near the valley include the ruins of Hardenstein Castle, Steinhausen Castle and the Theresia Mine and Field Railway Museum .
