Bommern is one of the seven districts in Witten and a well-known excursion destination due to the Muttental mining trail .

history

In the so-called Werdener Urbare a Bodenburion is listed in the year 990 , which is assumed to be from Bommern. A derived tradition of the name can still be found today in the name of the longest street in Bommern, the Bodenborn . Bommern did not emerge from a village center, rather several settlement focal points can be found today, which extend over the entire area of today's Bommern. Records from the late 15th century show that at that time ten large farms in Bommern had to be paid to Herdecke Abbey . Bommern gained importance beyond the region in the middle of the 18th century when coal mining began near the banks of the Ruhr . The area in which the coal was mined is now a popular excursion destination for visitors from all over the region , known as the Mining History Trail ( Bergbauwanderweg Muttental ). At the end of the 19th century, Bommern was initially part of the Volmarstein Office , an amalgamation of several small communities. On April 1, 1895, however, Bommern resigned from this office and henceforth formed an independent municipality within the district of Hagen .

Church history

Closely connected to the church in Wengern , the Bommeran Christians professed Luther's teachings from 1543 onwards . At the end of the 19th century there was considerable resentment between the Bommeran Protestants and the regional church. Bommern wanted its own church, but the request was "harshly" rejected by the regional church, so it is said, whereupon around 200 Bommerans left the church. In 1890 the regional church gave in to the urging of the Bommerans, and in 1892 construction began on its own church . The traditional orientation of the choir to the east was dispensed with, as it was possible to build the church on a hill, visible from afar.

In 1889 a Free Evangelical Congregation (FeG Witten) was established in Witten. It emerged from the Witten city mission, which also had its own printing and bookstore (today SCM Bundes-Verlag ). Both were founded by Friedrich Fries , who also initiated the “Bethanien” social welfare organization in Solingen. Both institutions still exist today.

Bommeraner Ruhr Bridge

Witten and Bommern are separated from each other by the Ruhr. Historical documents show that in 1503 a wooden bridge connecting Bommern and Witten was destroyed by extreme ice drift. Who built this bridge and when is unknown. A new bridge between Bommern and Witten was only inaugurated in 1882. A ferry operated between the two banks of the river until 1882. The bridge, built in 1882, was in service until 1936; the newly built overpass of the Ruhr between January and July of that year survived the bombing of the Allies unscathed during the war in 1944 and was in service until 1997. The current bridge was inaugurated on June 8, 1997.

Bommer ferry failure

In September 1838, 42 people, most of them Bommerans, died when the ferry capsized. The accident occurred when passengers, apparently intoxicated, began to rock the ferry. The majority of the guests came from a visit to the Witten onion fair. The ferry capsized when panic broke out on the ferry after a wave spilled over.

Incorporation

Building of the Federal publishing house in Bommern

In the course of the municipal reform of the year, Bommern gave up its independence on August 1, 1929 and joined the city of Witten on the opposite side of the Ruhr .

Population development after 1975

Despite the large number of new buildings that encouraged the influx of new residents to the green side of Witten, south of the Ruhr, the number of residents is falling in the long term. By 2020, the Witten Economic Development Committee is forecasting a 5.71 percent decline in the population in Bommern. In June 2005, 8,711 citizens lived in Bommern, according to a more recent census from August 31, 2006, the population has increased slightly to 8,744. In 1975, however, 9,322 people still lived in Bommern.

Economy and Infrastructure

traffic

Underpass of the Ruhr Valley Railway

The Ruhr separates Bommern just like the Herbede district from the rest of Witten. Three bridges (one for road traffic, the Ruhr viaduct and the Nachtigallbrücke for pedestrians ) connect the district with the city center .

Until October 18, 1954, a tram (SL 10) ran from the Witten town hall to Bommern.

The Ruhr Valley Railway , which has been a museum railway for many years , stops at Bommern station on the way from Hagen Hbf to Dahlhausen .

outlook

The 2015 S-Bahn target network originally planned to build a threading in the direction of Witten behind the Wetter (Ruhr) stop in order to allow the S-Bahn to run from here to the other side of the Ruhr, where they reactivated on the way to Witten Central Station Stopping points Wetter-Wengern Ost and Witten-Bommern Höhe should serve. Wetter (Ruhr) would thus become a hub station. After Oliver Wittke took office in 2005, however, all target agreements were overturned and reassessed. The necessary new Ruhr bridge was rejected, so that the S-Bahn will not change its course in the future.

Sacred Heart Church

The Catholic Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is a local church building in Bommern. The parish belongs to the Witten-Ruhrtal Pastoral Association in the Archdiocese of Paderborn .

Sacred Heart Church

In Witten there was hardly any Catholic church life after the Reformation, the population had joined the Reformation almost completely, the existing St. John's Church was rededicated. The owner of the Steinhausen estate remained a Catholic, and a Catholic service was occasionally celebrated in his house chapel. Witten was elevated to a town in 1825, the population rose sharply in the course of industrialization, in 1832 around 2,500 people lived in the village, in 1872 there were already 18,500. The first Catholics settled here around this time. From Langendreer , a mission congregation was set up as a church service in 1835, and it had its own pastor. Church services were held in a hall in Haus Berge, later they took place in a wooden shed that stood on the property of today's parish office. Further members of this mission congregation were the political congregations Annen, Bommern, Heven and Stockum, the entire congregation comprised about 400 members. This mission congregation was raised to the status of an independent parish of St. Marien in 1846. A Marienkirche was planned since 1837, it was consecrated in 1848 with 500 seats and expanded in 1896. The Old Catholics used the building from 1872 to 1891, and the Mareine parish built a wooden emergency church on the main street. The St. Josephs Church was built in Annen in 1881 and was later parish off. The Sacred Heart Church in Stockum was built in 1903; it has been called the Maximilian Kolbe Church since 1981, and a Sacred Heart Chapel was built in Bommern in 1903. The St. Josephs Church in Witten-West, built in 1904, was renamed St. Franziskus Church in 1954. In 1894 a plot of land with a size of about 6,400 m² could be bought to move the old wooden church of St. Marien to here, but the bishop forbade this. The construction of a new church was planned; in 1902 the Prussian Ministry of Culture doubted the financial possibilities of the newly formed community. After Boniface agreed to help, the building permit was granted and the foundation stone for the Sacred Heart Chapel was laid on May 10, 1903. The architect Rademacher was responsible for the construction planning. The dean of Hattingen took over the benediction of the chapel with around 100 seats, and the church services were initially carried out by the clergyman from St. Marien. In 1904, a Catholic elementary school was built on the church property, which from 1914 was run as a two-class Catholic chapel school. The elevation to the parish vicarie took place in 1912, the first parish vicar was Theodor Legge , who later acted as provost in Arnsberg. The new Herz-Jesu-Kirche was built from 1956 to 1958 according to plans by the architect Heinrich Stiegemann , it has around 280 seats and was consecrated by Archbishop Lorenz Cardinal Jäger.
