The pin Herdecke was a woman pen in Herdecke and is regarded as the nucleus of Herdecke.

history

Over the centuries, the monastery was also known under the names Herdicke, Hirreke, Hyrrike, Herrike, Hyrreke, Heirdike, Heirke, Herdicke .

According to Hermann Stangefol's work "Annales circuli Westphalici", the monastery was founded in 819 as a Benedictine monastery by a Frederuna . However, other contemporary mentions are missing for this representation. According to the opposite view, the foundation did not take place until the beginning of the 11th century.

The first documentary mention was made in 1227 when Bruno von Stypel pledged the bailiwick of the Herdecke monastery with the consent of the liege Gerlach von Strünkede to the monastery for 4 years. (Certificate, No. 1) In 1265 the monastery buildings are mentioned as destroyed. Belonging to the Benedictine order has been documented since 1313 (document, no. 11a) , so it is possible that the monastery is a subsidiary of St. Maria in the Capitol in Cologne. The market right was from Engelbert III. Awarded by the Mark for the first time in 1355 (certificate, no. 17a) . From the 15th century there was a free worldly women's monastery in the abbey, which was confirmed by a papal legate in 1488. With the secularization , the monastery was abolished by the government of the county of Berg on January 1, 1812.

Today the Protestant collegiate church of St. Mary is located on the grounds of the monastery .
