history

Beginnings

The story of Durchholz begins in the 16th century. Durchholz did not develop around a single courtyard or emerged from a settlement core like many other places in the region. Rather, the feudal lords of the region, the lords of Herbede and the lords of Elverfeldt , released the area for settlement. They allowed farmers and kotters to settle, for which they received a lease fee. In 1584 a so-called trademark contract was signed between the “Dorholtzers” (or “Marckenkötters”) and the court lords of Herbede.

Office Blankenstein

From 1817, Durchholz belonged to the Blankenstein office in the Bochum district .

Office Herbede

With the establishment of the Herbede office in 1886, the rural through wood became part of this office. Although the region around Herbede is considered the cradle of Ruhr mining , there were no large collieries in Durchholz , but there were quite a number of small mines . Through wood remained, despite the partial coal mining, rural, rural. After all, Durchholz had 1021 inhabitants in 1898.

City of Herbede

On April 1, 1926, Herbede became the municipality of Herbede, to which Durchholz also belonged. After the community reform of 1929, the large community became part of the newly founded Ennepe-Ruhr district . At the 1100th anniversary in 1951, Herbede was granted city rights, whereupon Durchholz was granted the status of an Herbede district .

City of Witten

With the municipal reform , which came into force on January 1, 1975, Herbede lost its independence and was incorporated into the city of Witten. Durchholz, a district of Herbede until 1974, is now a so-called "statistical district" of Herbede. In the public perception, Durchholz is perceived as a district.
