The pit Schickenberg is a limestone - quarry in oberdevonischer Massenkalk the west of Wuppertal in the municipality Vohwinkel on the border with Wülfrath . The quarry in the northeast near Wieden is named after the former location of Schickenberg , which has completely disappeared due to mining. The location of Sandfeld has also been almost razed by the pit. To the south of the pit runs Düsseldorfer Strasse , classified as Bundesstrasse 7 , and to the west, Wiedener Strassewhich is classified as state road 74 . Across the street from Wiedener Straße is the Voßbeck mine in the west . Both pits are connected with a tunnel below the state road 74, which was qualified as federal road 224 until 1990 .

The pit measures around 840 meters in the west-east extension and around 690 meters in the north-south extension (this refers to the area that is closed to the public). The mine is operated by Rheinkalk GmbH Werk Dornap (with company headquarters in Wülfrath), but the actual mining has been discontinued and the pit is used as a clarification pond for the neighboring mine. The water level is around 40 meters below ground level in the area (based on Wieden, which is around 190 meters above zero).

Accompanying minerals in mass limestone are calcite , iron pebbles , quartz , dolomite and marcasite . These can be found in the contact area between the mass limestone and the schisty , Devonian host rock.
