The state road 74 (L 74, North Rhine-Westphalia ) is a regional connection road in the Bergisches Land , which connects Velbert via Wülfrath and Wuppertal with Remscheid and Solingen . In the south-west of Wuppertal, it is designed as a dual carriageway - like expressway in both directions .

course

Beginning in Velbert

The L 74 is the continuation of the B 224 federal road and begins at the Velbert-Nord motorway triangle of the A 44 and heads south. In Velbert city center, the course of the road is marked as B 227 for a short distance . The L 74 then leads in a straight line to the Tönisheide district of Velbert . Parallel to the A 535 (formerly B 224 ), it runs on the edge of Wülfrath, past Schlupkothen , Aprath and several deep Wuppertal limestone quarries at the intersection of the B 7 to Wuppertal- Vohwinkel . In the center there it ends at the federal highway 228 .

The motorway-like expansion

The L 74 near Kohlfurth

A few kilometers to the east it continues at the Sonnborner Kreuz as a southern extension of the federal motorway 535 and now follows the course of the Wupper in its narrow valley through the state forest of Burgholz . In this section, the state road in the region has been given the colloquial name that the daily press also uses, " In der Kohlfurth ". The two-lane expansion of the L 74 state road ends at Solingen- Kohlfurth , before a traffic light-controlled junction enables the access to Wuppertal- Kohlfurth .

Halfway between the Sonnborner Kreuz and Kohlfurth there is a rest area on both sides of the L 74 . This rest area, which is also used as a car park for hikers and is equipped with a nameplate, benches, rubbish bins and access lanes like on a motorway, enables access to the Burgholz state forest. Since May 2008 a WSW mobil line has been running on the L 74 from Wuppertal- Elberfeld to Müngsten , one of the stops is this rest area.

A pedestrian bridge and two underpasses under the carriageways lead over this motorway-like section. This section is also designated as a motor road. A common footpath and bike path runs essentially parallel to the lanes on the west side.

Continue to Müngsten

The L 74 follows the course of the Wupper to Müngsten on the city limits of Wuppertal, Remscheid and Solingen. There it meets the federal highway 229 . The total length is about 24 kilometers.

history

The northern part from Velbert to Wuppertal is based on the course of Reichsstraße 224, which was later run as Bundesstraße 224. With the new construction of the parallel B 224n, today's A 535, the road was downgraded to the L 74.

After the Sonnborn Cross had been built, the Burgholz State Forestry began building the four-lane southern part of the L 74 in the Wupper Valley and was completed by 1975. A subordinate connecting road provided the route to Kohlfurth, which had to be widened considerably through structural measures. As part of the road construction, the Wupper had to be relocated to the west over a longer distance, whereby the locations and water-technical structures of four historical grinding docks on the Wupper were removed.

The four-lane expansion between Kohlfurth and Müngsten is currently no longer in planning. Heavy earth movements also had to be carried out for the two-lane construction, as there was no route there until then. The plan to create missing connection ramps to the L 74 within the Sonnborner Kreuz is more specific; a project dossier was created in 2005.

Since serious accidents, some of which were fatal, occurred on the route, in which the majority of motorcyclists were injured, the route is the focus of the regulatory authorities. Attempts are made to counter this development with speed limits, among other things, which are also monitored.
