The state road 418 (L 418, North Rhine-Westphalia) is a dual carriageway - like expressway in both directions in the south of the city of Wuppertal . It is also known as the southern bypass .

In the west, the L 418 connects to the federal highway 46 and the federal highway 535 at the Sonnborner Kreuz . From there it leads through the Rutenbeck Bachtal up to the foot of the Kiesberg . There the state road 70 branches off through the 1 kilometer long Kiesberg tunnel in the direction of the Wuppertal city center. The 1.8 kilometer long Burgholz tunnel of the L 418, which leads below the Burgholz state forest up to the southern heights of Wuppertal near Küllenhahn , also begins at the portal of the Kiesberg tunnel . This is where the first junction of the L 418 is located. At Theishahner Kreuz you can reach the Cronenberg district via Hahnerberger Straße in a southerly direction . In a northerly direction, the junction leads to the Küllenhahn district and to the Wuppertal waste incineration plant .

Shortly after the Theishahner Kreuz, the Hahnerberger Tunnel is the second tunnel structure on the state road. Behind the east portal is the next junction of Freudenberger Straße and Straße Vorm Eichholz. The L 418 then separates two of the former Wuppertal barracks . The next junction is on the streets Am Freudenberg and Dorner Weg . In a northerly direction, the main campus of the Bergische Universität Wuppertal on the Grifflenberg can be reached, shortly before the Freudenberg campus . The next junction is on the Lichtscheid near Ronsdorf . A third former barracks is located here, which is being converted into a commercial area.

In the eastern part, the L 418 at Ronsdorf turns into the state road 419 , which in the further course only has a single lane in each direction over the Blombachtal bridge connecting to the state road 58 (formerly federal road 51 ) at Wuppertal-Linde and to the federal motorway 1 at the entrance Wuppertal-Ronsdorf manufactures. In the medium term, a new four-lane construction of the L 419 with a direct motorway connection is planned.

Originally, the route between the Hahnerberger tunnel and chapels was provided with street lamps , due to the weak financial situation of the city, the lighting was switched off at the end of the 1990s. In the course of 2009 the lamps were also dismantled and the lamps were then used elsewhere in the city. Therefore, the bare lampposts are currently on the median.

history

The planning for the L 418 began as early as the 1960s. The first section was the connection from the A 46 through the Rutenbeck Bachtal and the Kiesberg Tunnel (L 70) to the Wuppertal city center at the end of the 1960s. At this point the A 46 ended before Sonnborn and this section briefly took up all long-distance traffic from the direction of Düsseldorf until the opening of the Sonnborn junction . The continuation by the Burgholz State Forestry was structurally indicated at this early point in time, as the connection through the Kiesberg tunnel was only realized as exits from the L 418, while the main lane at the level of the tunnel portals initially ended blindly.

The four-lane expansion of the state road between Küllenhahn and Lichtscheid on the route of older inner-city roads began in the 1980s. The gap to the section in the Rutenbeck Bachtal was only closed in 2005 with the opening of the Burgholz tunnel. For a long time, the plans provided for an above-ground route through the forest area, but after long-term protests by several environmental and citizen groups, this was rejected in favor of a tunnel solution for ecological reasons. The resistance was also directed against the southern bypass as such, since the connection to the A 1 will in fact create a busy motorway through the southern Wuppertal, which will probably also be used by long-distance traffic.

In addition to the southern bypass of Wuppertal and thus the relief of the highways and inner-city roads, especially in the Elberfelder Südstadt , the state road was also intended to serve military purposes, as there were four Bundeswehr barracks along its route. In the meantime, a department and institute of the Bergische Universität Wuppertal as well as industrial companies, in particular automotive suppliers, have settled on the former barracks grounds . This is why the road connection also bears the name Technologiachse Süd, propagated by politics and administration .

2007/2008 renovation

In addition to the Burgholz tunnel and the short Hahnerberger tunnel, there is certainly the popularly known " high- flyer" on Lichtscheid, the Lichtscheider Kreuz , the most elaborate engineering structure on the L 418. Here the expressway crosses two feeder roads to Barmen . Here at the highest point in the city, the Lichtscheider water tower is located within the intersection area. However, this intersection was a focus of accidents, and a study presented several mitigation measures. A traffic light-controlled intersection to the feeder roads was realized . In the period from 2007 to 2008, the bridge structure, which is passed by around 1500 vehicles per hour in the afternoon, was renovated.

In the area of the Sonnborner Kreuz and Rutenbecker Bachtal, two pedestrian bridges span the course of the L 418, four more bridges in the course of the southern heights.
