The Blombachtalbrücke is a road bridge with high traffic importance in Wuppertal .

location

It is located in the east of the city of Wuppertal about two kilometers northeast of Ronsdorf and 4.5 kilometers south of Barmen . The bridge spans the valley of the Blombach and spans the federal autobahn 1 (A 1), which is now three lanes , and the Wuppertal-Oberbarmen-Solingen railway line .

Transport links

Parkstrasse ( Landesstrasse 419 ) runs over the bridge in a single lane in each direction and connects Lichtscheid with Landesstrasse 58 (formerly Bundesstrasse 51 ) near Ronsdorf-Linde and further with the A1.

Technical specifications

The total span of the 10-span bridge is 15.5 m + 3 × 16.0 m + (4 × 15.3 m + 2 × 13.8 m + 4 × 15.3 m) = 150 m + 16.0 m + 19.0 m + 2 × 16.0 m + 15.5 m = 296.0 m. The maximum height above ground is 50.0 m with an arch stitch of 27.0 m. The clamped arch with a span of 150.0 m is a three-cell, 11.3 m wide hollow box made of reinforced concrete . The elevated superstructure is 14.7 m wide and consists of a four-cell hollow box made of reinforced concrete.

history

The bridge was built between 1957 and 1959 based on a design by Hellmut Homberg in collaboration with Josef Pirlet with architectural advice from Gerd Lohmer von der Beton- und Monierbau and inaugurated on October 15, 1959. Annoyed by the lack of a topping-out ceremony , the workers erected a gallows on August 7, 1959 , on which they hung a straw doll.

Until the Neckarburg Bridge was completed, the bridge was the reinforced concrete arch bridge with the largest span in Germany for almost 20 years. The structure has significantly shortened the connection between the Wuppertaler Südhöhen and the federal motorway 1 and the former federal highway 51 (today state road 58). It is now planned to connect the L 419 directly to the A1 via a direct descent (L 419 new), so that the Blombachtal bridge would then only be of local importance.

Specialty

Since its completion, the bridge has often been used for suicides , so it was secured with appropriate grating.
