The Kiesberg tunnel is a road tunnel in the urban area of Wuppertal . The tunnel crosses the 282 meter high gravel mountain .

description

The planning of the tunnel began in 1966 when the traffic concept was drawn up from 1962 around the Sonnborner Kreuz with the A 46 and the Wuppertaler Südtangente.

The tunnel was inaugurated and released on October 2, 1970 in the presence of the then Interior Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia, Willi Weyer . It connects the federal autobahn 46 (A 46) over the Sonnborner Kreuz and a section of the state road 418 (L 418) with the Neviandt road, state road 70 (L 70), in the Wuppertaler Südstadt . The tunnel was built to relieve the Wuppertal inner-city streets, especially the federal highway 7 ( Friedrich-Ebert-Straße ). The cost at that time was 50 million German marks . The tunnel has a clear width of 10 meters and a height over both floors of 11.8 meters. The tunnel walls are 0.8 to 1.5 meters thick and unreinforced .

The special feature of the tunnel is the two-story design, so that the two two-lane carriageways do not run parallel, but largely one above the other. With this construction, it is the first two-story car tunnel in Europe. While the lower tunnel tube (to the south of the city) has a length of 955 meters, the upper one (to the Sonnborner Kreuz) is naturally somewhat shorter at 855 meters.

Redevelopment

Due to leaks in the tunnel roof and walls, the first renovation was carried out in the 1980s for 2.67 million DM. The last major refurbishment, worth six million euros, took place between 1997 and 2000. One of the problems is the penetrating moisture, which can also lead to ice formation in winter. At that time, so-called “grouting” of the tunnel did not bring sustainable success. Now there are considerations to use a new one in the existing tunnel cladding in order to counteract the movements of the mountain range and the penetration of water. However, this would have the disadvantage that only one lane per tube could then be available. At that time, an additional, third escape staircase was built for 800,000 euros and a heating system was installed to counteract the formation of ice.

In April 2004, the retaining wall of the western portal was renovated for 80,000 euros. Heavy equipment was used to work on the wall on the slope, as there was a risk of parts of the concrete casing falling onto the roadway.

The Kiesberg tunnel was again comprehensively renovated by June 2016 in order to adapt this tunnel to the safety standards of the RABT (guidelines for the equipment and operation of road tunnels) 2006

State road 70

The state road  70 begins on the L 418 and runs as a motorway-like road through the Kiesberg tunnel. It is designated as a motor road for the entire course of the tunnel .

After exiting the tunnel, the L 70 leads north on inner-city roads. The course includes Neviandtstrasse , Viehhofstrasse , Südstrasse , crossing the Düsseldorf – Elberfeld railway line over the Südbrücke , Bahnhofstrasse , touching the Döppersberg intersection , crossing the Wupper over the Brausenwerther Brücke , Morianstrasse , Gathe , Uellendahler Strasse and Herzkamper Strasse included in the L 70.

After the L 70 has left the Wuppertal city area after Herzkamper Straße , it leads to Sprockhövel and ends there.
