The Südbrücke (also known as the "Südstraße Bridge") is a road bridge in Wuppertal that spans the Düsseldorf – Elberfeld line . As a connection from the junction Bahnhofstrasse , Hoeft Street and the South Street on the north side with the continuation of the South Street on the south side it is an important transportation link from the center of the district Elberfeld to South City , the UW and the southern districts Cronenberg and Ronsdorf .

Building

The south bridge is around 30 meters wide and 45 meters long. From the bridge there is access to the S-Bahn tracks at Steinbeck station . At the southern end of the bridge is the striking water tower of the Steinbeck train station .

history

The current bridge was built in 1963 as a single-span prestressed concrete bridge . The renovation of the old bridge was necessary because it had to be raised because of the electrification of the railway line. On the other hand, the new south bridge was widened to six lanes at the same time.

The south bridge is part of the south road ring , which was redesigned in 2007. From the urban planners' point of view, the new traffic planning was necessary in order to cope with the growing traffic flows. Due to the new street layout, the Südstraßering will no longer be used as a one-way street , but in both directions. The south bridge itself had to be sustainably repaired, the sidewalks were renewed and concrete repair work was carried out on the superstructure soffit. This work was necessary because the concrete cover of the reinforcement was too small when the building was being constructed. Furthermore, the shotcrete shell applied in 1984 showed hollow-sounding spots and flaking in some areas. The repair work was carried out in two construction phases for two months each in summer 2008. The total costs were estimated in advance at 300,000 euros.

In November 2008, massive damage to the interior of the structure was found again during a routine bridge inspection. The concrete in two of the seven hollow girders of the bridge had broken off and flaked off. As a precaution, sections of the bridge were cordoned off and then temporarily provided with non-slip steel plates. The repair took place in 2009. The steel plates were removed in April 2010.
