The pit 10 is a former limestone quarry in Haaner district Gruiten on the edge of the forest Osterholz on the outskirts of Wuppertal . The Krudtscheider Bach runs south of the break and the Bäusenberger Bach runs west .
From the quarry was dolomitic lized Massenkalk from the Gruiten-Dornaper Massenkalkzug dismantled. After the mining stopped, rare plant and animal species settled in pit 10.
The biotope complex consists of limestone grasslands, rubble heaps, pioneer forest, exposed rock heads, small bodies of water. Among the particularly noteworthy plant occurrences are the bee ragwort ( Ophrys apifera ), the stag's tongue fern ( Phyllitis scolopendrium ) and the centaury ( Centaurium erythraea ). The area is protected as part of the "Gruiten Nord-Ost / Hahnenfurth" nature reserve.
AG Natur + Umwelt Haan eV (AGNU) has been the tenant of the area since the beginning of 2008 and is developing the biotope further in terms of nature conservation.
