The Osterholz is a forest area in Wuppertal , north of the Vohwinkel district , it borders on the districts of Schöller and Dornap . It is the namesake for the Osterholz residential area .

The Oetelshofen quarry in the north and the construction of a post-war settlement in the east and the Wuppertal-Vohwinkel correctional facility in the south reduced the area of the forest in the 20th century.

There was an early written mention of the area in 1715 by Erich Philipp Ploennies as " Ostertholt " in his work Topographia Ducatus Montani . Etymologically , the name is to be interpreted as Ostwald. In the overview map of the Sonnborn community from 1868 it was referred to as " Easter wood ". The name of the settlement of the horticultural cooperative Wuppertal-West between Zur Waldkampfbahn and Gruitener Straße " Am Osterholz " was determined by the building committee on February 8, 1952. The street through the settlement was renamed " Am Osterholz " on July 20, 1981 . Another road, the " Osterholzer Straße ", crosses the forest area.

After it became known that the lime works wanted to cut down part of the Osterholz to make space for spoil heaps, a citizens' initiative was founded in 2019 to preserve the forest area. No solution has yet been decided.
