The pit Osterholz is a limestone - quarry to the west of Wuppertal in the municipality Vohwinkel on the border with Wülfrath . The quarry near Dornap / Schöller is named after the Osterholz forest area . It is also known as the Oetelshofen quarry .

The Eulenkopfweg hiking trail leads past the quarry.

The management of the quarry by the Oetelshofen company

The quarry, which is still in operation today, covers an area of eight hectares and is managed by Kalkwerke H. Oetelshofen GmbH & Co. KG . The company is the last independent family business of its kind that has remained in the regional competition.

The large spoil dump , known colloquially as "Monte Hermann", has grown to a height of more than 60 meters above the surrounding area in recent years. In 1983 the production quantities of pure limestone were 635,000 tons. With 94 employees, 122,600 tons of lime products were produced. In 1993 the output was 1,000,000 tons and 101 employees burned 150,000 tons of lime.

history

The first written mention of a limestone quarry near Hof Gerhardsfurth is dated to 1750. In 1857 Hermann Oetelshofen bought the Gerhardsfurth farm with the associated limestone quarry at an auction for 16,120 thalers . As a farmer, Oetelshofen and his wife mainly ran the farm and a lime distillery as a sideline . Hermann Oetelshofen descends from Anton Oetelshofen, who ran the Steinberg estate from 1773 .

With the capital from his father's legacy, Oetelshofen took a stake in the Ernst Hummeltenberg & Co. company , which was founded in Neu-Dornap in 1871, on December 21, 1872 . Like many others, the company was bought out by Dornap-Angertaler Aktiengesellschaft für Kalkstein und Kalkindustrie in 1888 . However, the Oetelshofen family did not give up the lime business. From 1897, Oetelshofen’s son Hermann was again burning lime in a ring kiln, which was extracted from the family's own quarry.

In 1899 40 workers were employed. In 1900 the Kalkwerke H. Oetelshofen GmbH was founded, in 1930 the development of the Hahnenfurth quarry begins. Previously, the Count of Schaesberg leased another, larger limestone deposit. The previously operated ring furnaces were supplemented by Seeger chess furnaces in 1937 , which were the first of their kind in the Dornaper area.

Hermann Oetelshofen Jr. was killed at the end of the war in 1945 when looters broke into his house. His sister Elfriede Iseke (née Oetelshofen) continued to run the company and was replaced in the company's management by her son Hermann Iseke in 1954. Today Jörg Iseke and Moritz Iseke are the managing directors and the Gerhardsfurth farm is still family-owned.

On the occasion of the 100th company anniversary, a non-profit foundation Kalkwerke Oetelshofen is established.

outlook

The company has already drawn up plans for how the site can be renatured when mining is completed in the late 21st and early 22nd centuries . Already decommissioned quarries show that the biodiversity in the vicinity of these areas is higher after successful renaturation than before use. The spoil heaps and former clarification ponds usually develop into biotopes that are worth protecting .

nature

Since 2005 a pair of eagle owls has settled in the pit.

Events

Occasionally, public events were held in the quarry, including the Red Bull X-Fighters in 2008 and a major pop concert. The location is also used for footshotings and as a filming location, e.g. B. used for the television series Wishlist or fashion and sports brands. Approx. 7,000 people take part in the Xletix obstacle course through the quarry every year. The quarry days take place in the quarry every two years . Visitors can explore the quarry by bus tours and see construction machinery. Furthermore, over 100 exhibitors from the fields of handicrafts , stone art and garden technology present their products. The expected number of visitors for 2019 was around 20 thousand people, as had come in 2017.

Red Bull X-Fighters

On August 16, 2008, the Red Bull X-Fighters event was held for the first time in Germany in the Oetelshofen quarry , in which a selection of the twelve best freestyle motocross drivers competed against each other and performed a three-hour show with spectacular motocross driver stunts. 15,000 spectators appeared. The event area was around 150 meters wide. The work in the quarry was interrupted.
