Achaia Clauss (Αχάια Κλάους) is a winery from Patras known primarily for Mavrodaphne wines.

history

In 1859 Gustav Clauss, who had immigrated from Bavaria in the wake of King Otto , opened a wine trade. Two years later he founded a winery together with Jakob Klipfel, which he later ran alone. From 1869 Achaia Clauss wines were exported to Germany. In 1872 Clauss and Theodoros Harburger again founded a wine trade in order to also start selling their own wines. From 1908 the company was a leader in the production of the Mavrodaphne and important in the production of the Demestica , with the death of Clauss in the same year, Gudert took over the company. The company lost its dominant position in the market by 1920, but achieved great growth again by the outbreak of the Second World War . In 1983 new bottling plants were inaugurated.

The winery as a destination

The winery

The winery was a popular destination in the 19th century and was visited by almost all Greek monarchs and many of their foreign guests. The jet set of the 1970s rediscovered the winery for itself; so came Aristotle Onassis and Omar Sharif , among others .
