Former basalt quarry Kuchhausen

The natural monument basalt crater Blauer Stein is a former quarry west of the Windecker district Kuchhausen in the Rhein-Sieg-Kreis in North Rhine-Westphalia .

history

The basalt deposit of Kuchhausen is located on an oval area of about 100 meters in length and is considered an isolated offshoot of basalt volcanism in the Westerwald.

In the Miocene , large areas of lava emerged in the Westerwald and formed closed basalt ceilings in most places, while at Kuchhausen magma broke in a chimney through the basement and the lava got stuck in the funnel-shaped chimney, where it solidified into the angular columns of basalt. Linzer Basalt AG mined basalt as a building material until the 1920s.

After giving up the quarry operations, the Leuscheider Land community and beautification association transformed the “blue stone basalt crater” into an excursion destination in the 1970s, which was declared a protected landscape component in 1986 .
