The former Rolloch I quarry of Hohenlimburger Kalkwerke am Mühlenberg is an abandoned quarry in the Hohenlimburg district of Hagen ( North Rhine-Westphalia ). Mass limestone of the Middle Devonian of the Givet stage was mined .

history

The Rolloch I tunnel was driven from Mühlenbergstrasse into the mountain, at the end of which a shaft was built vertically upwards, designed in the shape of a funnel and later provided with a scraper system. The rock extracted from the quarry was rolled through the shaft into the tunnel , where it was loaded onto lorries and transported to the Hohenlimburg lime works in Oeg for processing. The name Rolloch goes back to this mining method.

The tunnel was excavated on October 23, 1926 and used until 1967, after which it was massively closed in order to be able to use the pit as a clarification pond. The lake that formed in the disused quarry was still used as a settling basin for the water from the neighboring Steltenberg quarry until the 1990s . After the renaturation of the former quarry at the beginning of the century, very special plants are now thriving in the biotope, including moths, moths and grass snakes. There are wild orchids ( orchids ), winter horsetail or the round-leaved wintergreen .

The area in and around the former limestone quarry is located in the Steltenberg nature reserve in Hagen .
