Several species of orchids are in the vernacular orchids called and were each as Stendelwurz , stand Wurz or Satyrion referred. From a botanical point of view, these are the genera Dactylorhiza , Orchis and some other, sometimes monotypical, genera.

features

Orchids of the genus Dactylorhiza

  • Mostly spotted leaves.
  • Foliage leaves distributed on the stem, becoming smaller towards the top.
  • Always recognizable by the bracts that accompany the flowers.
  • Many species colonize damp locations.
  • Tubers resemble a hand.

Orchids of the genus Orchis , Neotinea and Anacamptis

  • There are spotted and unspotted leaves, the number of species with unspotted leaves predominating.
  • Leaves arranged in a rosette, usually 1–2 sheathed leaves surrounding the stem.
  • Most species colonize moderately moist to dry soils.
  • Tubers oval to round.

The species of the genus Neotinea were, with the exception of one species, counted to the genus Orchis until 1997 . Numerous species of the genus Anacamptis ( dog sausages ) that formerly belonged to Orchis are also called orchids.

Other species and genera that are also called "orchid"

  • Rosa Kugelorchis also known as Rote Kugelorchis or Rosa Kugel-Orchid ( Traunsteinera globosa )
  • Yellow globe orchis , also known as yellow orchid ( Traunsteinera sphaerica )
  • Dwarf stendel , also dwarf orchid ( Chamorchis alpina )
  • Round-leaved orchid ( Amerorchis rotundifolia )
