Is mined Massenkalk from a former coral reefs of Givetiums and the Upper Devonian . In addition to limestone and dolomite rock , there are karst chutes that are filled with younger sediments such as sands, silts , clays, green sand and quartz gravel. There are very well-preserved fossils in the HKW quarry, where the mass limestone is dolomitized in places , but marly (calcareous-clayey) rocks, bituminous shale and in crevices also fossil-rich loose rocks are inserted in other areas. The fauna is a typical Upper Givetian (382 - 375 million years old) "Stringunc fauna", which is determined by the brachiopods Stringocephalus burtini ("owl's head") and Uncites gryphus . In the fissures there are minerals such as calcite in several varieties, quartz , pyrite , barite , malachite , manganese , limonite and hematite .
