The hardenberg alum quarry "Alaunloch" (2020)
Remnants of the alum slate can be found on the old heaps.

The Alaunloch in the former peasantry Windrath is a medieval alum -Steinbruch in Velbert and is located in the district of today's city district Langenberg .

description

The alum hole is located on the "Hohlstraße", an early medieval road connection from the Ruhr Valley to the Bergisches Land . It consists of a 1 hectare and 11 meter deep alum quarry and several heaps . Remnants of the alum slate and charcoal from processing can be found there . The brewhouse was probably where the hikers' car park is now.

history

Alum mining has been practiced in the Velbert area since the Middle Ages. The "alum mine" in Windrath was first mentioned in 1597. The alum slate obtained was roasted, oxidized in the stockpile and then leached by alum boilers. The crystallized water-containing sulfuric acid double salt of potassium and aluminum ( potassium aluminum sulfate ) was of great importance in paper manufacture, dyeing and white tanning.

In ancient times, the mining of the alum hole is said to have also been carried out in civil engineering, as the findings of the LVR office for soil conservation in the Rhineland showed.

Because alum mining came to a standstill everywhere in Germany at the beginning of the 19th century, as the extraction of sulfuric acid became possible on an industrial scale, the remains of the structures are very rare.

tourism

The alum hole is located directly on the Neanderlandsteig .
