The A837 road is an A-road in the Scottish Council Area Highland . It is part of a link across the Northwest Highlands between the Dornoch Firth on the east coast of Scotland and the fishing port of Lochinver on the west coast.

course

The road begins at the junction from the A836 about where the River Oykel meets at the head of the Dornoch Firth . The junction is about one kilometer north of the small town of Invershin and about 10 kilometers south of Lairg . At the level of the junction, west of the road, is the menhir of Invershin Farm . From the junction it runs almost continuously in a north-westerly direction across the north-western Highlands in County Sutherland . It first follows the Strath Oykel, the valley of the river of the same name. Only a few scattered settlements exist in the sparsely populated area . In Rose Hall which opens A839 , which connect through to Lairg to the East Coast at Golspie manufactures. After about 25 kilometers, the road leaves gradually and slightly uphill the Strath Oykel to a flat watershed eventually the region Assynt and Ledmore Junction to reach where from Ullapool coming A835 opens. To the west of Ledmore Junction, the area is dominated by the impressive Suilven ridge .

From Ledmore Junction the A837 turns north and after about two kilometers enters the wide valley of the River Loanan , a tributary of Loch Assynt . About five kilometers after the small town of Inchnadamph at the south end of Loch Assynt, the A837 passes the ruins of Calda House and Ardvreck Castle on the north bank of the lake. At Skiag Bridge the A894 branches off in the direction of Kylesku and Scourie , via which there is a connection to the Scottish north coast at Durness . The A837 turns here again to the west and continues on the north bank of Loch Assynt and its outflow, the River Inver to Lochinver, the capital of Assynt. Shortly before the village, the narrow B869 branches off to the west, via which the scattered settlements up to the Point of Stoer with the Old Man of Stoer can be reached. The A837 runs as a promenade through Lochinver and ends at the local fishing port.

The A837 has a total length of 72.3 km. Large parts of the road in Strath Oykel are still designed as a single track road . The section between Ledmore Junction and Lochinver, which connects to the fully two-lane A835 from Ullapool, is also two-lane throughout. It has also been straightened in some places to ensure the connection of the port of Lochinver with trucks .

Between Ledmore Junction and the confluence of the B869 just before Lochinver, the A837 is part of the North Coast 500 holiday route .
