The A839 road is an A-road in the Scottish Council Area Highland . It runs from the east coast at Golspie across Sutherland via Lairg and is part of an east-west connection across the Northwest Highlands to the fishing port of Lochinver on the west coast.

course

The road begins on the Scottish east coast southwest of Golspie at the junction named after a former Far North Line station The Mound with the A9 . From there the A839 runs west in the Strath Fleet , the valley of the river of the same name. Parallel to the railway, the road passes the small villages of Rogart, Pittentrail and Muie as well as other individual settlements in this predominantly agricultural part of Sutherland. From about halfway between The Mound and Lairg, the road runs mainly through heather and moorland and reaches its highest point shortly before Lairg at the upper end of the valley of Strath Fleet.

Signpost on the A839 near Rogart

In Lairg, the largest town in this area of Sutherland, the A839 crosses the A836 , which runs roughly in a north-south direction and provides connections to the north coast and towards Inverness. West of Lairg, the otherwise two-lane A839 is designed as a single-track road . The A839 passes some smaller settlements and larger forest areas until it reaches its end at the confluence with the A837, which continues to the west coast near Rosehall.
