Lochinver ( Scottish Gaelic Loch an Inbhir ) is a port town in the north-western Highlands of Scotland . The name is derived from the River Inver , at the mouth of which Lochinver lies. Lochinver is located north of Ullapool and west of Loch Assynt in the very sparsely populated former Scottish county Sutherland in the Council Area Highland .

The main economic factors of the place are fishing and tourism . The port is the most important source of income and a sight of the town. Renewed and improved in the 1990s, it is mainly frequented by Spanish, French and Portuguese fishing fleets. Another attraction in Lochinvers is the Culag Woods . There is also a war memorial in Lochinver for the fallen of the First World War on the one hand and the fallen of the Second World War on the other.

Lochinver, the largest settlement in the Assynt area, offers two supermarkets, a butcher, a bank, post office, police, gas station, restaurants and a shop for household and outdoor supplies. There are also several small overnight accommodations.

Closer and wider surroundings

There are numerous hiking opportunities in the vicinity. A destination here is the Suilven , a mountain with an unusual shape, and the Kirkaig Falls . There are also numerous opportunities for fishing. This is particularly true of the River Inver and Loch Assynt.

One of the most attractive beaches in the vicinity is Achmelvich with year-round clear, light blue water. Harbor porpoises can sometimes be seen in the bay . Clashnessie is a small town near Lochinver that also has a sandy beach. From there you get to a waterfall.

Also in the vicinity of Lochinver is the small town of Culkein . What is worth seeing about Culkein is the scenic situation. The same applies to the region and coast around the small town of Drumbeg . Another attraction in the Lochinver area is the Old Man of Stoer with the Ru Stoer Lighthouse . The place Stoer is not far from the lighthouse on a wide open bay. In this bay there is a sandy beach and a church ruin nearby. All of these attractions in the Lochinver area are accessible via the B869 ( single track road ), which branches off the A837 .

To the east of Lochinver, Ardvreck Castle and Calda House are on the north bank of Loch Assynt . Loch Assynt is located in the Inchnadamph National Nature Reserve , which spans 3200 hectares and is located between Loch Assynt and Ben More Assynt . The area around Inchnadamph and Lochinver is a popular destination for hikers, geologists and botanists because of its diversity. So do the Bone Caves , which are about two miles from Inchnadamph. Another destination for hikers are the Kirkaig Falls , which can be reached from a small parking lot a few kilometers south of Lochinver along the River Kirkaig .

A little further from Lochinver is the Knockan Crag Visitor Center , which can be reached via the A835 . From this visitor center you have a wide view of the surrounding mountains and lochs. The Hydroponicum is a destination for those interested in horticulture. It is in the small town of Achiltibuie .

The area around the city is characterized by rocky terrain, some of which have bizarre shapes. Near the coast there are islands and small rounded rocks that give the landscape a “Scandinavian” character. Most of it is about 3 billion year old Lewisian gneiss .
