The A835 road is an A-road in the Scottish Council Area Highland . It is considered to be one of the most scenic roads through the Highlands , especially in the western part, and is part of one of the most important connections between the east and west coasts in the northwestern Highlands.

course

The road begins at a roundabout with the important north-south connection of the A9 and the A832 at the small settlement of Tore on the Black Isle , about 10 kilometers northwest of Inverness . From there it continues in a north-westerly direction and passes the village of Conon Bridge on a bypass . She then crosses the River Conon and the Far North Line before crossing the A862 at a roundabout north of Maryburgh . The latter establishes the connection to Dingwall , about one kilometer to the north , which, apart from Inverness, is the largest town on the Black Isle. The A835 then runs west on the north side of the River Conon. The A832 joins at Moy Bridge and the A834 from Dingwall at Contin . Together with the A832, the A835 runs south of Strathpeffer along the Blackwater to the small village of Garve on the Kyle of Lochalsh Line . While the A832 leads directly to the west parallel to the Kyle of Lochalsh Line via Achnasheen towards Gairloch , the A835 continues to follow the Blackwater Valley north through the Strathgarve Forest west of Ben Wyvis . Gradually the road then heads northwest and along the south bank of the Loch Glascarnoch reservoir , followed by a short section on the north bank of Loch Droma . Between the two lakes lies the watershed between the North Sea and the Atlantic Ocean west of Scotland. The flat and wide pass is called Dirrie More . Until Ullapool there are only a few scattered settlements along the road in this largely uninhabited part of the Highlands.

At Braemore Junction, the road runs along the scenic Corrieshalloch Gorge . At Braemore Junction, the A832, which takes a long detour along Loch Maree and the west coast, joins the A835 again. From the settlement of Inverlael, the road runs along the east bank of Loch Broom , a sea hole leading deep inland . Just before the end of Loch Broom is Ullapool , the largest town in the Northwest Highlands and an important ferry port for the connection to Stornoway in the Outer Hebrides . In Ullapool, the A835 passes the city center on the outskirts, and the A893 , which is just under half a kilometer long, branches off directly on the shore and leads along the promenade to the ferry port .

From Ullapool the A835 leads north through various smaller settlements through the wide Strath Canaird and Assynt . To the north of the small town of Strathcanaird, at the small settlement of Drumrunie, a side road branches off towards the west coast to Achiltibuie . To the west of the road is Inverpolly Forest , a largely uninhabited moorland and heathland landscape with many lakes and impressive, isolated mountains such as the Suilven . Shortly before the small town of Elphin, on the right of the A835, you will find the visitor center of Knockan Crag , a geological outcrop of the Moine Thrust overpass . At Ledmore Junction, the A835 finally joins the A837 , which continues north in the direction of Lochinver and connects to Durness on the Scottish north coast via the A894 and A838 . To the east, the A837 leads over Strath Oykel towards Lairg and Bonar Bridge and on to the east coast.

The A832 has a total length of 106.5 km, including the joint section with the A832 between Moy Bridge and Garve. In the “Local Plan Wester Ross” of the Council Area, the A835 and the A832 are to be secured as a “scenic route” due to their natural beauty.

Between Moy Bridge and Garve and Braemore Junction and Ledmore Junction, the A835 is part of the North Coast 500 Holiday Route .
