The A862 road is an A-road in the Scottish Council Area Highland . It begins in Inverness at the Telford Street Roundabout , a roundabout with the A82 and leads from there via Beauly , Muir of Ord and Dingwall to the Ardullie Roundabout with the A9 on the north bank of the Cromarty Firth .

course

The starting point of the A862 is the Telford Street Roundabout in downtown Inverness to the west. It branches off from the A82 here, the important connection through the Great Glen between Inverness and Fort William and on towards Glasgow . Shortly after the roundabout, the A862 passes the Caledonian Canal on a swing bridge . West of Inverness, the A862 runs parallel to the Far North Line on the south bank of the Beauly Firth . The village of Kirkhill is passed on a southern bypass road. West of Kirkhill, the A833 from the direction of Drumnadrochit and the A831 from the direction of Cannich join the A862 in quick succession . Between the two junctions, the A862 crosses the River Beauly on the Lovat Bridge , a bridge built between 1811 and 1814 under Thomas Telford . Due to the narrow width of the lane, motorized traffic can only cross the bridge in one direction, controlled by signals . The bridge is listed in the Scottish Monument Lists in the highest monument category A.

The Lovat Bridge over the River Beauly

From the confluence of the A831, the road, which had previously run in an east-west direction, turns north. It also runs parallel to the Far North Line through the places Muir of Ord , Conon Bridge and Maryburgh at the western end of the Black Isle towards Dingwall , the largest town in this area of the Highlands after Inverness . In Muir of Ord, the A832 , north of Maryburgh, crosses the A835 , both important links between the east and west coast of Scotland. North of Dingwall, the A862 runs northeast along the north bank of the Cromarty Firth to the roundabout at the north end of the Cromarty Bridge , with which the A9 , the central north-south connection through the Highlands, crosses the Cromarty Firth.

The entire route of the A862 is part of the North Coast 500 Holiday Route .

history

Until the completion of the Kessock Bridge in 1982, the A9 ran along today's A862. The completion of the Kessock Bridge and the construction of the Cromarty Bridge, which had been in operation three years earlier, made it possible to significantly shorten the A9 north of Inverness by running it across both bays and the Black Isle. The previous section of the A9 between Inverness and Cromarty Bridge was renamed the A862 in 1982.
