Loch Maree is a freshwater lake in Wester Ross , in the Northwest Highlands of Scotland . The lake is located in the Council Area Highland and is the fourth largest lake in Scotland with an area of 28 km².
Loch Maree has the typical elongated shape of a lake created by glaciers in the Ice Age . It is about 20 km long but less than four kilometers wide. There are 25 smaller and five larger islands covered by forest on the lake . One of them is Maree Island , which has the remains of a chapel , a coin tree , a sacred spring and a cemetery . The Hermitage of Saint Maol Rubha is said to have been here, who founded the Applecross Monastery in 672 . The water of the lake is said to have healing powers. Loch Maree is dominated in the southeast by the wide rock mass of the 981 m high Slioch .
Like Loch Ness , this lake also has its own monster called Muc-sheilch . Loch Maree is considered one of the most beautiful lakes in the Highlands . Due to the remoteness, there is little tourism there . The A832 runs along the south bank .
Another lake in the Fiordland National Park in New Zealand bears the name Loch Maree , which is also very isolated on the Dusky Track .
