Location of Wester and Easter Ross

Wester Ross ( Scottish Gaelic Taobh Siar Rois ) is an inexactly demarcated region in the west of Highland in northern Scotland . In particular, it represents the counterpart to Easter Ross on the east coast facing the North Sea . Both refer to the traditional county of Ross-shire , to which they belonged. This extended with their mainland share - also a piece of the Outer Hebrides counting Isle of Lewis still belonged to the county - across the north of Scotland. These two parts, in which the majority of the population lived, were connected by a sparsely populated part of the Highlands .

The rural region with around 6,000 inhabitants extends along the east coast of the Minch . As the capital applies Ullapool : here, the of Inverness approach leading A835 via a ferry connection to Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis ago. Other larger towns are Applecross , Aultbea , Dundonnell , Gairloch , Lochcarron , Plockton , Poolewe , Torridon and Shieldaig , all on the coast, as well as Achnasheen and Kinlochewe in the hinterland .

Under the name of Wester Ross , a part of the region is a conservation area ( National Scenic Area expelled NSA). A biosphere reserve that has been around the Beinn Eighe since 1976 and named after it was expanded in 2016, and since then it has also been called Wester Ross.
