Shieldaig ( Gaelic : Sìldeag ) is a village on the Applecross Peninsula in Wester Ross in Ross-shire on the west coast of Scotland .

The place on the south bank of Loch Torridon was founded in 1800 to train sailors for the war against Napoleon Bonaparte , but after his (first) defeat and his exile on Elba a new role as a fishing village emerged; therefore the small island just off the coast was never cut down to rig up warships and is now a nature reserve. The name of the village is based on a Viking word meaning "herring hole" - herring still live in the bay today.

Shieldaig is a community of about 100 people and has its own school, a small pub, a community hall that also serves as a chapel, and a church. It is a popular holiday destination and, in addition to those interested in sea fishing, it also attracts visitors to the Torridon Hills , a few miles away. Shieldaig also holds a community festival on the first weekend in August. The place can be reached via the A896 from Kinlochewe and Strathcarron , there is a local bus connection to Strathcarron station on the Kyle of Lochalsh Line .
