Kinlochewe ( Scottish Gaelic : Ceann Loch Iù ) is a small town in the Highland Council Area in Scotland . It is located in the highlands south of Loch Maree and at the northwestern exit of the valley of Glen Docherty .
Naming
The name of Kinlochewe comes from the earlier name of Loch Maree, which was called Loch Ewe until around 1700 . To distinguish it from the bay of Loch Ewe , Loch Maree was given its current name, based on the holy Mealrubha , to whom the Christianization of the area is attributed. Kinlochewe kept its name despite the renaming of the lake, which means something like "head of Loch Ewe". The place as well as the Kinlochewe Estate of the same name belonged to the Clan Mackenzie .
Infrastructure and tourism
Kinlochewe is a regional road junction on the A832 between Ullapool , Gairloch and Achnasheen and the branching A896 to Torridon and Shieldaig and the Applecross peninsula . It is a popular starting point for hiking and climbing tours in the surrounding mountains. Excursion destinations are also the surrounding lakes, especially Loch Maree . To the northwest lies the Biosphere Reserve of the Beinn Eighe , to the east the large area of the Letterewe Wilderness , which is hardly accessible by public roads . Other destinations for hikers include the surrounding Munros such as the Slioch , Liathach or A 'Mhaighdean .
Due to its convenient location, Kinlochewe has an infrastructure that is primarily geared towards tourist requirements. The place has one of the few petrol stations in a wide area, the "Kinlochewe Hotel " , which has existed since around 1800 , a campsite , various bed and breakfasts , a post office and a small supermarket . Kinlochewe owns two churches, one of the Free Church of Scotland and one of the Church of Scotland . The population is about 100 people, according to the Census 1991 as well as the 2001 live 107 people in 41 households in the village. There are bus connections to Gairloch, Dingwall and Inverness .
