The A896 at Torridon

The A896 road is an A-road in the Scottish Council Area Highland . It is considered one of the most scenic roads through the Northwest Highlands and opens up the settlements on both banks of Loch Torridon on the Scottish west coast as well as the sparsely populated areas of the Applecross peninsula .

course

The A896 is predominantly a single track road ; only a few sections have two lanes. It begins in Kinlochewe , where it branches off from the A832 . From Kinlochewe to Torridon , the A896 runs through Glen Torridon , which is considered to be one of the most scenic valleys in the Highlands . North of the road are the Torridon Hills with the over 1,000 m high mountain ranges of Beinn Eighe and Liathach , several parking spaces on the A896 serve as starting points for hikes and mountain tours in the Torridon Hills. In Torridon a local road branches off, which opens up the scattered settlements on the north bank of Loch Torridon and ends in the small settlement of Lower Diabaig .

South of Torridon, the road first crosses the River Torridon and leads on the south bank of Loch Torridon via Torridon House to the west to Shieldaig . This section is one of the few two-lane parts of the A896. In Shieldaig, a bypass replaces the previous tour through the town center. A narrow access road branches off south of Shieldaig, which opens up the small settlements on the banks of the Applecross peninsula. The A896 turns, again as a single-track single track road, to the south and runs over the hilly isthmus that borders the peninsula to the east. Along the south end of Loch Damh and past Loch Coultrie , the A896 runs in the valley of the River Kishorn to the hamlet of Tornapress. There the narrow pass road branches off, which leads over the Bealach na Bà to the south of Applecross. The road over the Bealach na Bà is one of the most demanding roads in Scotland due to its inclines and narrow curves and is often closed in winter due to drifting snow .

The A896 in the Lochcarron thoroughfare

The road turns east again via the small settlement of Sanachan on the banks of the Loch Kishorn inlet . From the village of Lochcarron , the A896 is again expanded to two lanes and forms the town's main road. It runs through the village, which is lined up as a road village along the A896, directly on the banks of Loch Carron to the junction with the A890 , about one kilometer north of Strathcarron station on the Kyle of Lochalsh Line . The A896 has a total length of 55.2 km.

Between Kinlochewe and the junction of the road to Applecross near Shieldaig and the junction of the road over the Bealach na Bà and the junction with the A890 at Strathcarron, the A896 is part of the North Coast 500 holiday route .
