The Slioch ( The Spear in Gaelic ) is a 981 meter high mountain in Scotland . It is located in Wester Ross in the Council Area Highland at the southeast end of the north shore of Loch Maree and is one of the Munros . At 981 m, the Slioch is the highest mountain around Loch Maree. Building on gneiss , the summit structure made of torridonic sandstone rises on three sides with steep rock walls. Only to the southeast is the Slioch less forbidding, here the Coire na Sleaghaich offers the easiest access option . The Gaelic name Der Speer is only understandable from the east, here the summit structure with the upstream Sgurr an Tuill Bhain shows from its narrow side. From the west and south, however, the Slioch looks like a steep rock fortress.
The Slioch can be reached from Kinlochewe . The boarding time is about four to five hours. Due to the height of most of the peaks and the location above Loch Maree, the Slioch is a popular destination for hikers and mountaineers.
