Stornoway [ ˈstɔːrnəweɪ ] ( Scottish Gaelic Steòrnabhagh ) is the capital of the island of Lewis and Harris and with 8000 inhabitants the most important town in the Outer Hebrides off the west coast of Scotland .
history
Stornoway, the best natural harbor in the archipelago, was founded in the early 9th century by Vikings with the Norse name Stjórnavágr and fortified around 1100 with a castle that was destroyed in the 16th century.
Herring fishing and processing flourished in the 19th century , with salted herring being a popular snack in bars. In the 1920s, however, demand fell sharply and large numbers of young residents emigrated, mainly to Canada.
On January 1, 1919, the Iolaire sank off the port of Stornoway with over 200 returnees from the First World War. This exacerbated the already considerable shortage of men in the Outer Hebrides due to the many war dead and also resulted in a large number of young women, including Mary Anne MacLeod , mother of Donald Trump , emigrating because they could not find husbands on the islands .
language
The traditional language of the Outer Hebrides is Scottish Gaelic . However, English has been the mandatory language of instruction in schools since 1872, which has led to a gradual decline in Gaelic, especially in Stornoway. In the 2011 census, 43% Gaelic-speaking residents were found in the municipality of Stornoway.
traffic
The port of Stornoway is the archipelago's most important link to the mainland. There has also been a small airport since 1937 .
