Sheilagh Kesting

Sheilagh Kesting (born June 10, 1953 in Stornoway , Isle of Lewis ) is a Scottish pastor of the Church of Scotland .

Life

Kesting attended the Nicolson Institute in Stornoway and studied Reformed theology at the University of Edinburgh . In January 1980, Kesting was ordained . Their first congregation was Overtown Parish Church , near Motherwell, North Lanarkshire , from 1980 to 1986 . Until 1993 she served in St Andrew's High Church , Musselburgh in East Lothian . She then worked as Ecumenical Officer for the Church of Scotland until 2016 .

After Alison Elliot , Kesting was the second woman to be elected moderator for the Church of Scotland. This highest office of the Church of Scotland she held as the successor to Alan McDonald from May 2007 to May 2008. She was followed in the office by David Lunan . Since then she has been called The Very Reverend .

Honors

The University of Edinburgh awarded Kesting an honorary doctorate as Doctor of divinity in the 2007/08 academic year .

In recognition of her services to ecumenism, Kesting was awarded the papal Order of Gregory on November 6th by Archbishop Leo Cushley .
