Leo William Cushley (born June 18, 1961 in Airdrie ) is a Scottish clergyman and Archbishop of Saint Andrews and Edinburgh .

Life

Cushley received in the 7 July 1985 Uddingston , South Lanarkshire , the priesthood for the Diocese of Motherwell . In 1992 he joined the Vatican's diplomatic service. He worked in numerous African countries, in Portugal and at the United Nations. Most recently, he was head of the English-speaking section of the State Secretariat . As part of this activity, he worked closely with Pope Benedict XVI. and Pope Francis together, for example when visiting heads of state. He also accompanied Pope Benedict on his trips abroad to Cyprus, Malta and England.

Pope Francis appointed him Archbishop of Saint Andrews and Edinburgh on July 24, 2013 . He received his episcopal ordination on September 21st of the same year by the archpriest of the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls , James Michael Cardinal Harvey . Co- consecrators were the Apostolic Nuncio in Great Britain, Archbishop Antonio Mennini , and the Archbishop of Glasgow, Philip Tartaglia , from whom he took office after Cardinal O'Brien resigned on allegations of abuse.
