history

Archdiocese of Saint Andrews and Edinburgh

St Andrews was an episcopal see as early as 908, which fell with the Scottish Reformation . The present Archdiocese of Saint Andrews and Edinburgh was founded on October 13, 1653 by Pope Innocent X as the Apostolic Prefecture of Scotland ; first prefect was William Ballantine . On March 16, 1694 it was converted into a Vicariate Apostolic , initially as the Vicariate of Scotland. On July 23, 1727 the Vicariate Apostolic Scotland was divided into two vicariates: the "Lowland District" and the " Highland District ", on February 13, 1827 the Vicariate Apostolic "Lowland District" with the Breve Quanta laetitia by Leo XII. divided into the vicariates "Eastern District" and " Western District " and the "Highland District" renamed "Northern District".

With the restoration of the Catholic hierarchy in Scotland, Pope Leo XIII. with the circumscription bull Ex supremo Apostolatus on March 4, 1878, the Vicariate "Northern District" to the Diocese of Aberdeen , the Vicariate "Western District" to the Archdiocese of Glasgow and the Vicariate "Eastern District" to the current Archdiocese ; first archbishop was John Menzies Strain . Numerous Catholic immigrants came in the 1990s, v. a. from Poland, to Edinburgh, who shape the archbishopric today.
