The Diocese of Galloway ( Latin : Dioecesis Candidae Casae o Gallovidianus ) is a diocese of the Roman Catholic Church . Episcopal Church is the Cathedral of St. Margaret in Ayr .

history

According to legend, the diocese was founded in the 4th century by St. Ninian . The names of some Anglo-Saxon bishops have survived from the 8th and 9th centuries. Thereafter, the history of the diocese is largely in the dark, only in the 12th century under King Fergus it appears again in the sources as the Whithorn diocese. It was under the jurisdiction of the Archbishop of York until it was added to the Archbishopric of Glasgow in 1492 after the elevation of Glasgow . With the acceptance of the “Scots Confession” by the Scottish Parliament in 1560, the break with Rome occurred. However, the line of bishops of Galloway was torn down only in 1688 in the wake of the upheavals in the Church of Scotland .

The modern diocese Galloway was on March 4, 1878 in the course of the restructuring of the Catholic Church in Scotland by Pope Leo XIII. Erected with the circumscription bull Ex supremo apostolatus apice from the new Archdiocese of Glasgow . In 1997 the diocese celebrated its 1600th anniversary with great effort, starting from the legendary year of foundation 397 by St. Ninian.
