St. Mary's Cathedral (Edinburgh)
St. Mary's Cathedral (also called St. Mary's Roman Catholic Cathedral ) is the Roman Catholic cathedral of Edinburgh , Scotland . It is located in the East End of Edinburgh on Picardy Place and is the seat of the Archbishop and the Archbishopric of Saint Andrews and Edinburgh .
history
Edinburgh was the seat of a bishopric as early as the early Middle Ages , around the 8th century. With the Reformation in Scotland , the bishop's see became orphaned for several centuries from 1571. The building of Catholic churches was also prohibited until 1778.
However, when the number of Catholics in Scotland slowly increased in the wake of the Industrial Revolution , the Catholic Church in Scotland under Bishop Hay decided in 1801 to build a large new church in Edinburgh's New Town . The former cathedral in St Andrews had long been in ruins, the bishopric was finally moved to the capital, but the new archbishopric was named Saint Andrews and Edinburgh .
James Gillespie Graham , who also designed the Roman Catholic Church of St. Andrews in Glasgow, was hired as the architect . In August 1814, the building was completed according to the plans of Graham in the Scottish Gothic Style , the Scottish variant of the neo-Gothic . In the decades that followed, some smaller extensions followed: in 1841 Bishop Gillis had the altar area extended, and in 1866 Bishop Strain added a side chapel . In 1878 the church was made a bishopric and thus a cathedral. 1896 there was a further expansion of the chancel and 1932 raising the ceiling to its present height.
organ
The organ was built in 2007 by the organ builder Matthew Copley (Kingston-upon-Thames). The instrument has 66 registers on three manuals and a pedal and can be played from two console tables . The actions are electric.
