Philip Tartaglia (born January 11, 1951 in Glasgow , Scotland ) is a Scottish clergyman and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Glasgow .

Life

Philip Tartaglia attended St. Thomas' Primary School in Riddrie and St. Mungo's Academy in Glasgow. He moved to St. Vincent's College in Langbank and later to St. Mary's College in Blairs . Subsequently Tartaglia was sent to Rome to the Papal Scottish College. Philip Tartaglia graduated from the Pontifical Gregorian University with a degree in philosophy and catholic theology . He received on 30 June 1975 in the Church of Our Lady of Good Counsel in Dennistoun by the Archbishop of Glasgow , Thomas Winning , the sacrament of Holy Orders .

In 1976 Philip Tartaglia returned to Rome to continue his studies. Tartaglia became Vice Rector of the Pontifical Scottish College in 1978 . It was in 1980 at the Pontifical Gregorian University for doctor of theology doctorate . Philip Tartaglia then returned to his home diocese and became an assistant priest in the parish of Our Lady of Lourdes in Cardonald . In 1981 he was also a lecturer at St. Peter's College in the Newlands district of Glasgow and in 1983 rector of this college. In 1985 Tartaglia was appointed vice rector of Chesters College in Bearsden and in 1987 its rector. In 1993 Philip Tartaglia became assistant priest of St. Patrick's Parish in Dumbarton and in 1995 he became pastor of St. Mary's Parish in Duntocher . In 2004 Tartaglia was appointed Rector of the Pontifical Scottish College in Rome.

On September 13, 2005, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him . to the Bishop of Paisley . He was ordained bishop on November 20, 2005 by the Archbishop of Glasgow, Mario Joseph Conti , in St. Mirin's Cathedral in Paisley ; Co- consecrators were Archbishop of St. Louis , Raymond Leo Burke , and Bishop Emeritus of Paisley, John Aloysius Mone . Tartaglia chose the motto Da robur, fer auxilium. ("Give strength, bring help."), Which comes from the hymn verbum supernum prodiens of Thomas Aquinas .

On July 24, 2012, Benedict XVI called him. to the Archbishop of Glasgow. The inauguration took place on September 8 of the same year. From February 27, 2013 to September 21, 2013, he was also Apostolic Administrator of Saint Andrews and Edinburgh during the Sedis vacancy following the resignation of Keith Patrick Cardinal O'Brien .
