James Michael Cardinal Harvey (born October 20, 1949 in Milwaukee , Wisconsin , USA ) is archpriest of the Patriarchal Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls .

Life

After studying Catholic theology and philosophy , Harvey received on June 29, 1975 in Rome through Pope Paul VI. the sacrament of ordination for the Archdiocese of Milwaukee . From 1976 to 1978 he graduated from the Pontifical Diplomatic Academy and was an alumne of the Pontifical North America College . In 1980 he was at the Pontifical Gregorian University after completing his dissertation on the subject of The Jurisdiction of the College of Bishops after Gianvincenzo Bolgeni. A presentation in the light of the teaching of "Lumen gentium" of the Second Vatican Council on Dr. iur. can. doctorate and then joined the diplomatic service in the March 25 of the same year the Holy See one. There he initially worked as an attaché in the Papal Representation in the Dominican Republic , before moving to the Vatican State Secretariat on July 10, 1982 . On October 27, 1982 Pope John Paul II awarded him the honorary title of Chaplain of His Holiness ( Monsignor ) and on November 9, 1994 the title of Honorary Prelate of His Holiness .

On July 22, 1997, John Paul II appointed him Assessor in the State Secretariat and on February 7, 1998 appointed him Titular Bishop of Memphis and Prefect of the Prefecture of the Papal House . On March 19 of that year he donated to him in St. Peter's Basilica , the episcopal ordination ; Co- consecrators were the Cardinal Secretary of State Angelo Sodano and the Archbishop of Krakow , Cardinal Franciszek Macharski .

On September 29, 2003 he was appointed titular archbishop pro hac vice while retaining his titular bishopric .

As prefect of the papal house, Harvey had the then Pope Benedict XVI. brokered the valet Paolo Gabriele , whose stealing and disclosure of documents from the Pope's apartment triggered the first Vatileaks affair in 2012. Benedict XVI. then replaced Harvey with his confidante and private secretary Georg Gänswein and appointed Harvey himself on November 23, 2012 archpriest of the Patriarchal Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls . In the consistory the next day he accepted him as a cardinal deacon with the titled deaconry San Pio V a Villa Carpegna in the college of cardinals .

Harvey's motto is “ Zelus domus tuae ” (German: “Zeal for your house”) and comes from Psalm 69.10  EU : “Because zeal for your house has consumed me”.

After the resignation of Benedict XVI. Cardinal Harvey attended the 2013 conclave elected Pope Francis .

James Michael Harvey was inducted into the Knightly Order of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem on November 13, 1997 with the rank of Commander . In 1998 he was promoted to commander with a star. In 2012 he was appointed Grand Cross Knight by Cardinal Grand Master Edwin Frederick O'Brien .
