The National is a Scottish daily newspaper founded on November 24th 2014 with editorial offices in Glasgow . The daily newspaper appears five days a week from Monday to Friday in tabloid format . The decisive factor behind the founding of The National was that in the run-up to the referendum on Scottish independence in 2014, many newspapers in Scotland, with the exception of the weekly Sunday Herald, had opposed independence . The National is published by Newsquest , a newspaper publisher that also publishes the Sunday Herald.

According to the initial plans, a circulation of around 15,000 copies was aimed for. On the first day of sales, the circulation was finally 60,000 and was quickly sold out. A short time later, however, the circulation fell to around 36,000. The first week of sales was planned as a test phase in order to be able to assess the response from the readers. It was then announced that The National would be published as a daily newspaper on a permanent basis. The newspaper's website is also to be expanded.
