Poolewe ( Scottish Gaelic : Poll Iù ) is a place in the Highland Council Area in Scotland . It is located in the Northwest Highlands on the River Ewe . At 1.6 kilometers, this is one of the shortest rivers in Scotland and flows from Loch Maree to the south of the town in Loch Ewe , a deeply cut estuary on the Scottish west coast.

history

The area of today's Poolewe was already settled in the Pictish times . In 1992 the Poolewe stone was discovered in the cemetery of Inverewe Church in Poolewe , a Pictish symbol stone of Class I. It bears the Pictish representations of a crescent moon and a V-rod. Some depressions and two spirals that meet to form a delta are carved in the crescent. The stone is in the cemetery.

The present-day town emerged at the southern end of Loch Ewe around 1600 when an ironworks was built there. It processed iron ore delivered by ship on the basis of charcoal , which was produced in the surrounding forests . The overexploitation of the forests associated with charcoal production brought iron processing to a standstill after a few years. Poolewe then gained importance at the end of the 18th century as the starting point for a regular mail service to Stornoway on the Hebridean island of Lewis and Harris . The port was also used to transport cattle from the Hebrides. From Poolewe, the herds of cattle were driven along Loch Maree via Achnasheen to the markets on the east coast.

The ship connection to the Hebrides was operated by steamers from 1849 . Two years later, Poolewe received the first fixed road link along Little Loch Broom on what is now the A832 .

During the Second World War , Loch Ewe was used as a gathering point for northern sea convoys due to its protected location, which is difficult to access for submarines . To connect the base built for the Royal Navy , the road connection to the nearest train station in Achnasheen was expanded. Even after the war, the Royal Navy used Loch Ewe as a base. Various bunkers and gun platforms still bear witness to the military past.

Poolewe has a primary school, a church and a small supermarket . The Poolewe Village Hall is available for events. The place also has a café , several hotels and various bed and breakfasts . Due to its location and infrastructure, Poolewe serves as a local center for the smaller towns on the banks of Loch Ewe, such as Aultbea or Inverasdale .

In Poolewe is Inverewe Garden , one of the northernmost botanical gardens on earth. Due to the Gulf Stream , Poolewe has a mild climate, so that subtropical plants also thrive. Inverewe Garden is one of the primary destinations for most visitors to the area. Inverewe Garden and Poolewe have a weekday bus service to Inverness .
