Pas de deux is a Canadian, experimental short dance film directed by Norman McLaren from 1968.
action
In the film, a ballerina initially dances by herself. Later a dancer appears and both dance together. The film does not contain any dialogues.
production
The scenes were created in front of a black background, with the white-clad dancers being backlit. So both people appear at times only as bright outlines. With the help of an optical printer , McLaren sometimes produced up to eleven copies of individual frames. Since the dance scenes are played in slow motion, this results in multiplications and occasional superimpositions of individual movements, with the movement appearing to unfold in a floating manner. The resulting effects make the scenery appear more and more abstract as the film progresses. The pictures are accompanied by Romanian pan flute music.
Pas de deux was shown at the Chicago International Film Festival in October 1968 .
Awards
At the Phnom Penh International Film Festival won Pas de deux the award for Best Short Film and was on the Chicago International Film Festival nominated for a Silver Hugo in the same category. At the Canadian Film Awards 1968, Norman McLaren won a special award for pas de deux .
Pas de deux received a BAFTA for Best Animated Film in 1969 and won the Grand Prix at the Melbourne International Film Festival . The film was also nominated for an Oscar in the Best Short Film category in 1969.
