View from the sphere

The ball of rubble Pasewalk – Police – Phoenix is a work of art by the Swiss - Canadian installation artist Ernest Daetwyler in Pasewalk in the Vorpommern-Greifswald district in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania .

The sphere was a cross-border project between the city of Pasewalk and the Polish partner municipality Police . Daetwyler processed around 30 tons of rubble from the Second World War into a contemporary sculpture in the form of a sphere with a diameter of around 5.5 meters. He received the support of students from Berlin universities as well as the European University Viadrina in Frankfurt (Oder) . They recovered, cleaned and transported rubble from the two cities that were badly destroyed in the war. The rubble from Pasewalk, for example, came from the Friedberg district, where Pasewalk farmers dumped the rubble with the help of horse-drawn vehicles in 1945 and which was still there in 2007. They first erected a steel frame on a concrete foundation and assembled the recovered parts into a work of art within seven months. The aim was to create a "symbol for transformation and renewal".

Around 12.5 tons of concrete replacement mortar were required to join the debris. The work of art is accessible via a small staircase and was completed in December 2009. On March 12, 2011, an information board was put up.
