Golspie ( Scottish Gaelic Goillspidh ) is a village in the Scottish Council Area Highland . It is located in the traditional county of Sutherland about 30 km northeast of Invergordon and 65 km southwest of Wick on the north coast of the Moray Firth . In 2011 Golspie had 1,407 inhabitants. Near Golspie is Dunrobin Castle , the seat of the Duke of Sutherland , and the Iron Age Broch Carn Liath .

history

Golspie developed as a fishing village in the 18th century. The connection to the railway network and the construction of the pier made Golspie attractive for tourists who wanted to visit the nearby Dunrobin Castle, for example. At the end of the 19th century, Golspie was one of the largest villages in northern Scotland.

Dunrobin Park is located in an old quarry in Dunrobin Woods. It was excavated in 1880 and contained the crouched skeleton of a woman, a complete beaker, 118 slate beads ; 18 pebbles and three flints . The finds are in the Dunrobin Castle Museum.

The Golspie Stone is a Pictish symbol stone .

traffic

With the A9 , the most important trunk road in the Scottish Highlands runs directly through Golspie. The village has its own train station, which is regularly served by the Far North Line on its route from Inverness to Wick and Thurso . Ferries once operated from the Golspie jetty.
