Dunrobin Castle is a castle on the east coast of Scotland , less than two kilometers north of Golspie . It is the ancestral seat of the Sutherland clan and thus also of the Earl of Sutherland . With 189 rooms, Dunrobin Castle is the largest residential building in the Northern Highlands .

history

The core of the building goes back to a residential tower from the 13th century, the remains of which are still visible today in the inner courtyard of the castle. Dunrobin was first mentioned in 1401 as the fortress of the sixth Count of Sutherland, Robert de Moravia. In the 17th century, two new wings were added to the old castle , which were connected to the old building by a tower with a spiral staircase .

In the period from 1845 to 1851, the castle received its current appearance under George Sutherland-Leveson-Gower, 2nd Duke of Sutherland , which is reminiscent of a French castle. The architect was Charles Barry , who also designed the English Parliament building in London . Barry also designed the palace garden, which is modeled on the grounds in Versailles . In 1872 Queen Victoria stayed at Dunrobin Castle.

After much of the interior of the 19th century was destroyed by fire in 1915, it was redesigned according to Robert Lorimer's designs. In the late 1960s and early 1970s the castle for seven years served as boys internat . The current owner is Alistair Sutherland, 25th Earl of Sutherland . He inherited the castle in 2019 from his mother Elizabeth Sutherland, 24th Countess of Sutherland , who inherited it in 1963 from her uncle George Sutherland-Leveson-Gower, 5th Duke of Sutherland , while the title Duke of Sutherland was given to a distant relative, John Egerton , 6th Duke of Sutherland , fell.

Todays use

The garden is open to the public all year round, the castle only from April to October. The interior can be viewed on a tour. In the gardens there is also a museum with trophies from big game hunts and a falconry . The castle has its own train station on the Far North Line .

Others

In 1975 the palace park was used as the location for Stanley Kubrick's film Barry Lyndon .
