Alistair Charles St. Clair Sutherland, 25th Earl of Sutherland (born January 7, 1947 ) is a British peer .

He is the eldest son of Charles Noel Janson (1917-2006) and Elizabeth Sutherland-Leveson-Gower . Since birth he had the family name of his father, Janson . After his mother had inherited the title Countess of Sutherland in 1963 , he apparently carried the courtesy title of Lord Strathnaver as her marriage and changed his family name to Sutherland .

He attended Eton College and completed his studies at Christ Church College of Oxford University as a Bachelor of Arts from. From 1969 to 1974 he worked for the Metropolitan Police and between 1976 and 1979 at IBM .

When his mother died on December 9, 2019, he inherited her title of nobility as the 25th Earl of Sutherland . The hereditary chief dignity of the Sutherland clan is also associated with the title . As Earl of Sutherland , he holds the oldest still existing and thus historically highest-ranking Earl title of the Peerage of Scotland and is thus Premier Earl of Scotland .

Marriages and offspring

In 1968 he married Eileen Elizabeth Baker for the first time. The marriage ended in divorce in 1980. The marriage resulted in two daughters:

  • Hon. Rachel Elizabeth Sutherland (* 1970);
  • Hon. Rosemary Millicent Sutherland (* 1972);

In 1980 he married Gillian Murray in his second marriage. With her he has a son and a daughter:

  • Alexander Charles Robert Sutherland, Lord Strathnaver (* 1981);
  • Hon. Elizabeth Sutherland (* 1984).
