Elizabeth Sutherland, 24th Countess of Sutherland
Elizabeth Millicent Sutherland, 24th Countess of Sutherland (born March 30, 1921 in Chelsea , London, † December 9, 2019 in London ) was a British peeress and non-party politician .
She was the hereditary chief of Clan Sutherland .
life and career
She was born in March 1921 as Elizabeth Millicent Sutherland-Leveson-Gower as the only child of Lord Alastair Sutherland-Leveson-Gower (1890-1921), the younger son of Cromartie Sutherland-Leveson-Gower, 4th Duke of Sutherland . Her mother was Lord Alastair's wife, Elizabeth Hélène Gardner Demarest (1892-1931), a divorced American.
Her father died on 28 April 1921 aged 31 during an expedition in Rhodesia in a malaria disease . The mother married the Russian Baron Georg von der Osten-Driesen in 1931 , but died three months later. Elizabeth then became the ward of her uncle George Sutherland-Leveson-Gower, 5th Duke of Sutherland . When this uncle died childless on February 1, 1963, she was his closest relative. She therefore inherited his entire fortune with large estates in Sutherland including Dunrobin Castle and also the subordinate title of Earl of Sutherland as the 24th Countess of Sutherland . The Duke title and the other subordinate titles of her uncle can only be inherited in the male line and therefore fell to John Egerton, 5th Earl of Ellesmere as 6th Duke of Sutherland. In the same year she changed her family name, which had been Janson since they were married in 1946 , to Sutherland and was recognized as Chief of Clan Sutherland .
She was the director of the Sutherland Dunrobin Trust . Sutherland was not a member of the Hereditary Peerage Association .
Membership in the House of Lords
With the title, she also inherited the then associated seat in the House of Lords . The Hansard does not record any speeches from her in Parliament. She lost her seat through the House of Lords Act 1999 . She did not run for any of the remaining seats. She did not run in later by-elections either. It was not on the Register of Hereditary Peers .
family
She married Charles Noel Janson (1917-2006) on January 5, 1946. She had four children with him:
- Alistair Charles St Clair Sutherland, 25th Earl of Sutherland (* 1947) ⚭ (1) Eileen Elizabeth Baker, ⚭ (2) Gillian Murray;
